Tourism leaders pose at the GITF 2025 Meaningful Tourism Forum in Guangzhou

PATA Promotes ‘Meaningful Tourism’ at Guangzhou Travel Fair

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) reaffirmed its support for “Meaningful Tourism” during the Guangzhou International Travel Fair (GITF) 2025, emphasizing the need for a more values-driven approach to tourism development across the Asia-Pacific region.

As the tourism sector rebounds post-pandemic, PATA urged destinations to look beyond traditional metrics like visitor numbers and revenue. Instead, the association called for a more holistic framework that prioritizes community wellbeing, cultural preservation, visitor satisfaction, and environmental care.

PATA Chair Peter Semone, speaking at the China Outbound Tourism Forum and the Meaningful Tourism Forum on May 17, said the industry must shift from a “numbers game” to a purpose-led movement.

“Tourism must evolve from a numbers game to a values-driven endeavour,” Semone said. “Meaningful Tourism challenges us to rethink success—not just in terms of arrivals or spending, but in how well we serve communities, protect heritage, and enrich lives.”

He added that PATA is proud to partner with the Meaningful Tourism Centre to guide this shift across Asia and the Pacific.

The Meaningful Tourism Forum featured remarks from Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt, Executive Director of the Meaningful Tourism Centre, who outlined the core principles of the concept. He highlighted its relevance for China’s evolving outbound travel market and changing traveler expectations.

A roundtable discussion brought together experts from across the tourism sector to explore how destinations can integrate meaningfulness into product design, policy development, and destination management.

Participants emphasized that long-term industry resilience must be underpinned by social equity, cultural relevance, and environmental responsibility. The concept of Meaningful Tourism, they noted, reframes travel as a tool to empower host communities while delivering deeper experiences for visitors.

Earlier this year, PATA and the Meaningful Tourism Centre signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on knowledge-sharing, training programs, and tools to help destinations embrace more inclusive and sustainable tourism models.

GITF 2025 provided a timely forum for these discussions, drawing participation from government officials, private sector leaders, and tourism professionals. The event underscored growing global momentum toward reimagining tourism’s role in building resilient, liveable, and meaningful societies.
