A Conversation with Capella Bangkok’s GM: Antonio Saponara

Bangkok is no stranger to luxury, but few properties deliver it with the grace and authenticity of Capella Bangkok.

I spoke with Khun Antonio Saponara, the hotel’s General Manager, about what makes this riverside retreat so unique. From Michelin-starred dining and private villas to curated cultural experiences, Capella Bangkok offers a calm yet enriching escape right in the heart of the city.

Q: Could you please introduce us to your background in the Tourism and Hotel industry?

Antonio: I am originally from Naples, Italy, and my passion for hospitality began in my teenage years. After earning my diploma in hospitality, I moved to London in 1991, which marked the start of an international career spanning over 35 years and across 10 countries. Throughout my journey, I have focused exclusively on the luxury hotel and resort segment. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most prestigious hospitality brands in the world, including Aman, GHM, Jumeirah, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, and Capella Hotels & Resorts.

Q: What are your thoughts about the future of the hotel industry in Thailand, Asia, and in the world? Also, new trends in the hospitality sector of Asia & Thailand?

Antonio: I believe the future of the hotel industry, both in Thailand, across Asia, and globally, will be shaped by increasing competition, particularly in the luxury segment. We are likely to see more players entering the market with smaller, high-end properties that scale quickly by building strong brand recognition. These new entrants will differentiate themselves through exceptional levels of personalized service and high-quality amenities. At the top end of the luxury market, I expect to see the most dynamic and innovative developments.

One of the most significant trends gaining traction, particularly in Asia and Thailand, is the focus on offering unique and meaningful experiences. Guests today are looking for more than just comfort
they want to leave with new knowledge, perspectives, and memories. For example, in Bangkok, this might include fishing with local communities in the south, taking Muay Thai lessons from a world champion, or exploring hidden chambers of the Grand Palace typically closed to the public. These kinds of experiences provide authenticity and a deeper connection to the destination, which is increasingly valued by modern travelers.

Q: Could you please tell us why guests prefer your hotel, and your important markets?

Antonio: Our clientele is incredibly diverse, with guests coming from all over the world—there isn’t a single dominant market, which reflects the broad appeal of Capella Bangkok. What truly sets us apart is the serene and peaceful environment we offer.

Nestled along the Chao Phraya River, our lush riverside gardens and sunset views create a tranquil retreat that stands in striking contrast to the vibrant energy of Bangkok. Guests also deeply appreciate our service style, which is both warm and genuine, striking the perfect balance between attentiveness and authenticity. Combined with our thoughtful amenities, these elements create a truly memorable and personalized experience that keeps guests returning.

Q: Please tell me about hotel services, rooms, and other facilities?

Antonio: Capella Bangkok offers a refined and intimate luxury experience along the Chao Phraya River, combining elegant design with exceptional service. The hotel features 101 accommodations, including rooms, suites, and villas—all with unobstructed river views. Our Riverside Villas offer private gardens and plunge pools, providing a unique sense of privacy and connection to nature within the heart of the city. Guests can enjoy a range of bespoke experiences and services, including our Capella Culturists who curate personalized itineraries and local cultural immersions.

For dining, we are home to Côte by Mauro Colagreco, a Two-Michelin-starred restaurant offering contemporary Riviera-inspired cuisine, as well as Phra Nakhon, which celebrates the rich flavors of traditional Thai cooking in a relaxed riverfront setting. Other facilities include Auriga Wellness, our tranquil spa sanctuary with a focus on holistic well-being, a riverside outdoor pool, a fitness center, and exclusive meeting and event spaces. Every detail at Capella Bangkok is designed to offer guests a sense of calm, connection, and discovery.
